Dia dos Grumetes The Pirates of the Caribbean take over Marina da Glória

The Brazilian stopover in the Volvo Ocean Race, Marina da Glória was transformed by means of spectacular décor into Pirate City on March 27, 2006. In a fantastic, imaginative and exciting atmosphere, 500 children turned out on "Pescanova Grumetes and Pirates Day," an event hosted by The Black Pearl's official co-sponsor Pescanova, Spain's largest branded frozen seafood and fishing company, with ears keenly tuned for tales of the sea and sailing.

The waterfront themed area made children feel like real pirates. Paul Cayard, Skipper of The Black Pearl, and his crew, the Pirates of the Caribbean shared the excitement of their experiences onboard The Black Pearl and the hardships of life on the high seas.

In addition to a lecture by The Black Pearl's Skipper, children enjoyed a series of interactive stage shows of dancing and gymnastics from the Circo Popular do Brasil and the children's drum section group of the Unidos da Tijuca samba school.

At each of the ports of call in the race, a Pirate City is staged to teach local children about navigation and nautical sports. In Rio, the event is organized by MaxSports.
